Book Coaching

A beautiful brick house in a garden in Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh

What we would like to start with!

Writing a book is a lot like building a house. You don’t start with a fully built structure ready for paint and décor (wouldn’t that be nice!) but a plan. After that plan, you need to prepare the ground, then comes framing and plumbing and electrical and HVAC and insulation. It sounds like a daunting task, but most houses in the US are built in under a year! To many of us, writing a whole book feels monumental, but it doesn’t have to be.

Sometimes, all we have is a vague idea, a “feeling” of what we want our book to become. Or maybe we have a character in mind, or maybe just a scene. Whatever you’re starting with, my job is to help you make a plan, lay the groundwork, and build a frame.

Over the course of sixteen weeks, I will work with you to write your book. For the first two weeks, we will start with exercises to help you get a solid understanding of your manuscript’s narrative arc, pacing, character and plot development, and point of view. Then you start the exciting part: the writing! Over the next fourteen weeks, I will guide you on how to create scenes that matter and a sturdy framework for your manuscript to stand on.

I don’t currently offer book coaching services for non-fiction books, but check back later, I may soon!
